MP3 Naming Conventions
Basic Formula
Using "track numbers" seems to be the best approach. It gives the default sort order at MediaMax, on hard drives, in iTunes, and on the file system:
Track_Topic_Context_Date.mp3
01_MapOfMind_Samish_2004-06-15.mp3 02_MapOfMind_Samish_2004-06-16.mp3
Names can also include info on subject matter specific to the talk, when that's easy, helpful, relavant:
01_AbhidharmaSkandas1_Seminar_2005-04-06.mp3 02_AbhidharmaSkandas2-3_Seminar_2005-04-13.mp3
Repackaging for Different Collections
Using track numbers will allow us, eventually, to re-package the same talks in different order -- for example, in a listing of sesshin talks and in the listing for the Study Guide.
From Samish Island June 2006(note: exact dates missing):
01_Fukanzazengi1_Samish_2006-06---.mp3 02_Fukanzazengi2_Samish_2006-06---.mp3 03_Fukanzazengi3_Samish_2006-06---.mp3
Same talks in the Study Guide might be:
06_Fukanzazengi1_Samish_2006-06---.mp3 07_Fukanzazengi2_Samish_2006-06---.mp3 08_Fukanzazengi3_Samish_2006-06---.mp3
Or possibly:
06-SG_Fukanzazengi1_Samish_2006-06---.mp3 07-SG_Fukanzazengi2_Samish_2006-06---.mp3 08-SG_Fukanzazengi3_Samish_2006-06---.mp3
At the moment, there's no category for sesshin in the audio archives and I'm not inclined to add it till we do the redesign. And, the talks in the Study Guide are nicely named for Study Guide use! So, for now, I'll just use the formula above for all talks except the Study Guide, and use the current file names for Study Talks, just adding track numbers.
Adding MetaTags
Notes for using MediaMax:
- Newly uploaded or renamed files with an MP3 or .wav extension are automatically cross-posted to the Music Locker, where they can be tagged (so the same file appears both there and in the File Manager)
- When you add tags in the Music Locker to the MP3's, or if the MP3's are uploaded with tags added in iTunes, the system automatically creates the folders in the Music Locker for Albums, Artists, and Genres -- and lists files with the varous appropriate folders
- Changing the "Title" tag in the Music Locker does *not* affect the actual file name (the same is true in iTunes), allowing for more friendly track titles
- When using tags, it's best to duplicate the track number, from the file name, in the track tag (labeled #).
You can see my approach to using the tag fields by going to the Music Locker and clicking on "Albums":
# : Same track number as in file name Title: From Topic in filename, but more friendly (can drop the "album" info, see below) Album: Subfolder name from Hosted folder Genre: EDZ SourceContext (as in "EDZ Dharma Seminar")
The problem, as noted in my email to support, is that the tags aren't coming along with the files when you download them. At least, not for me, not yet. It's not clear whether the system is just very slowly processing the tags, in which case, we might want to go ahead and add them now, or if we'd lose that work when they fix something else that's broken. The later seems unlikely to me, but....
Testing:
- Link via "Hosted Link" column in File Manager > Hosted folder Genjo Koan 1 (http://www.mediamax.com/everydayzen/Hosted/Dharma%20Seminar/Genjokoan/01_Genjokoan1_Vancouver_2006-05-13.mp3?action=save) : No metadata
- Link via "Single File Download" in Music Locker: Genjo Koan 2 (http://download-v5.streamload.com/99c80374-1501-4e8a-a87f-98f7e34ff0d5/everydayzen/Hosted/Dharma%20Seminar/Genjokoan/02_Genjokoan2_Vancouver_2006-05-14.mp3?action=save): No metadata
Generating Links for Off-site Downloading
To get the URLs for posting on another site, i.e. the direct link for downloading the MP3's (to input into the EDZ database):
- Go to the Hosted folder for your account (you must be logged in for this to work)
- Navigate to the subfolder holding the files for which you want download links (for posting on another site)
- Find the HOSTED LINK column
- Right-click (on PC) or Ctrl-click (on Mac) on the URL in the Hosted Link column to copy link location
- Paste the link to a text file
- Then add ?action=save (without the quotes) to the end of each link
- Use this URL where you want the download to appear
You should end up with a URL that looks something like:
Remember that, in the EDZ database entry screen, you'll have to enter a "0" in the CD Price field or you'll get an error message.
Note: In case you see a "Download" button and get confused:
You can publish files for downloading via a "Download" button, from either the Locker or the Hosted folder. The URL you get is a bit ridiculous, as in:
You get the same URL whether you click "Download" from the Locker or the Hosted folder. Again: This indicates that there is only one copy of each MP3, listed both in the File Manager and the Music Locker. This means that the metatags -- also called, for MP3 files, ID3 tags -- attached to each file should download with the file, no matter where you grab the download link from.
The first method, outlined in bullet points above and suggested to us as a workaround by MediaMax support, gives a slightly shorter, cleaner URL.

Misc notes from Lynne:
Genjokoan - Norman often gives the same lecture series in Bellingham or Vancouver as he gives here. We need to ask him if he wants just one (and which one) or both up on the website. I think the NW also makes a recording of his talks so his students there have access to copies from their group if they want them.
Marin, Oct. 2005 are the sesshin talks from St. Dorothy's Rest. At one point, Norman said he didn't want them on the website. They aren't a series and I think his thinking was that people who were there could ask for cds of all or particular talks but they weren't so appropriate for people who weren't there. Someone can ask him again, he may have changed his mind.
